Eswatini’s new world-class International Convention Centre signals a bold new chapter for the Kingdom’s economy — attracting international investment, trade events and business summits to the heart of the Ezulwini Valley.

EZULWINI – His Majesty King Mswati III on Saturday officially opened the Ezulwini Palazzo International Convention Centre (ICC) in Ezulwini, positioning the Kingdom as a serious contender for international business, trade exhibitions, investment summits and high-value economic events.

The opening, which formed part of the 40/58 Double Celebration marking His Majesty’s 40 years on the Throne and His 58th Birthday, drew heads of state, government ministers, diplomats and business leaders from across the region and beyond.

A Strategic Infrastructure Milestone

The facility — named Ezulwini Palazzo by His Majesty — includes modern conference rooms, a 200-seater meeting space, world-class dining halls and a theatre designed for international-standard productions. It is the culmination of a national infrastructure vision that His Majesty said was conceived in the early 2000s, with the explicit goal of placing Eswatini on the global map for conferences, exhibitions, tourism and business events.

His Majesty said proper infrastructure was fundamental to economic transformation, investor confidence and sustainable national development.

“The great work that you have seen today is a result of a lot of cooperation and contributions from various sectors and stakeholders, which has resulted in this marvellous work of art,” His Majesty said.

The Economics Behind the Vision

His Majesty drew on lessons from Nevada in the United States, citing world-class hospitality and convention infrastructure as a proven driver of economic returns. He noted that a single major facility could generate approximately US$2 million in revenue in one hour on an average day — underscoring the economic logic behind Eswatini’s investment in Ezulwini Palazzo.

The King said the facility was designed not only to serve as a venue, but to catalyse broader economic activity — attracting international visitors, stimulating local enterprise and growing the country’s profile as a business destination.

Exhibitions held during the opening showcased local brands spanning jewellery, fashion and premium consumer products — a deliberate signal that the facility is calibrated for the high-end market and the international clientele it is built to attract.

Phased Opening, Immediate Revenue Generation

His Majesty confirmed that the ICC component was being opened first to allow the facility to begin generating revenue immediately, while construction on the hotel component continues. The phased approach reflects a commercially pragmatic strategy to keep the broader development financially self-sustaining.

To mobilise additional capital for the hotel’s completion, His Majesty launched a raffle initiative, with tickets priced at E200,000 each. Prizes include luxury vehicles — among them Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini models — displayed at the opening. His Majesty encouraged Emaswati, regional business leaders and friends of Eswatini to participate, framing the purchase as a direct investment in a national development project rather than a mere lottery entry.

UAE Operator Appointed, Taiwan Recognised as Key Partner

The facility will be managed by Palazzo Hospitality, a Dubai-based luxury hospitality management company founded in 2019 and best known for operating Palazzo Versace Dubai. With Africa among its preferred regions for global expansion, Eswatini becomes one of the company’s first significant footholds on the continent — bringing with it international operational standards, brand credibility and the management systems required to compete for regional and global events.

His Majesty also recognised the Government and people of Taiwan as key partners in the development, with Taiwan’s Foreign Minister attending the opening to represent the President of Taiwan.

What It Means for Eswatini’s Business Landscape

The opening of Ezulwini Palazzo arrives at a moment when the MICE economy — Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions — is increasingly recognised across Africa as a driver of foreign direct investment, tourism receipts and local supply chain activity.

For Eswatini, a landlocked Kingdom of approximately 1.2 million people, a facility of this scale and standard changes the conversation about what is possible. It creates a platform for the country to bid for regional summits, international trade expos, agricultural conferences and development forums — events that bring spending visitors, media attention and business relationships that extend well beyond the event itself.

Ezulwini Palazzo is now open for business. His Majesty declared that organisations seeking to host meetings and events could proceed immediately.
