Agribusiness Monthly Issue 35 | May 2026

The May 2026 edition of Agribusiness Monthly captures Eswatini agriculture at a critical winter stress-test moment, as the country pushes to finish the fight against Foot and Mouth Disease while farmers confront water shortages, feed pressures, stock theft, heatwave losses and tightening production conditions.

This issue leads with the national FMD containment campaign, including the vaccination drive, renewed compliance calls by the Prime Minister, and the impact on feedlots and the wider beef value chain. It also examines the distress facing Eswatini’s feedlot sector, where only 212 of 619 registered feedlots remain operational, while highlighting farmers and institutions still investing in livestock recovery.

Beyond livestock, the edition explores crop diversification, market-driven farming and climate-smart production, with features on cassava exports, African ginger, sugar beans, oyster mushrooms, traditional vegetables, butternut, mangoes and indigenous food enterprises. It also covers water challenges in farming communities, EHIS mandatory registration, hides standards, agroecology at UNESWA, and youth-led agribusiness innovation.

Together, Issue 35 reflects a sector under pressure but actively adapting through discipline, market alignment, innovation and resilience.
