Matsapha, 21 January 2025 – Chief Executive Officer of the National Maize Corporation (NMC), Mavela W. Vilane, has urged farmers to prioritize bean production during the upcoming February planting season. Speaking at a press conference held at the NMC offices, Vilane emphasized the importance of beans as a critical crop for Eswatini’s food security and economic growth. The press conference highlighted the successes of the 2024/2025 ploughing and planting season under the Government Input Subsidy Programme and the Subsidized Tractor Hire Service. Vilane noted that while the tractor subsidy budget has been fully utilized, tractors remain available at the standard cost of E580 per hour. Recognizing the challenges faced by farmers during the last season, including extreme weather conditions such as heat waves and storms, Vilane commended their resilience. He encouraged farmers to leverage bean production as an opportunity to improve household food security and access lucrative markets. “We urge farmers to explore opportunities in bean farming as the planting season approaches,” Vilane said. “Beans are not only nutritious and in high demand but also an essential component of building a sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.” To ensure success, farmers were encouraged to work closely with extension officers based at their nearest Rural Development Areas (RDAs).
