NMC Calls on Farmers to Plant Beans this February

Matsapha, 21 January 2025 – Chief Executive Officer of the National Maize Corporation (NMC), Mavela W. Vilane, has urged farmers to prioritize bean production during the upcoming February planting season. Speaking at a press conference held at the NMC offices, Vilane emphasized the importance of beans as a critical crop for Eswatini’s food security and economic growth. The press conference highlighted the successes of the 2024/2025 ploughing and planting season under the Government Input Subsidy Programme and the Subsidized Tractor Hire Service. Vilane noted that while the tractor subsidy budget has been fully utilized, tractors remain available at the standard cost of E580 per hour. Recognizing the challenges faced by farmers during the last season, including extreme weather conditions such as heat waves and storms, Vilane commended their resilience. He encouraged farmers to leverage bean production as an opportunity to improve household food security and access lucrative markets. “We urge farmers to explore opportunities in bean farming as the planting season approaches,” Vilane said. “Beans are not only nutritious and in high demand but also an essential component of building a sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.” To ensure success, farmers were encouraged to work closely with extension officers based at their nearest Rural Development Areas (RDAs). These officers will provide support in best farming practices, pest management, and market access. Vilane reiterated the NMC’s commitment to supporting farmers and fostering collaboration with all stakeholders to create a vibrant grain industry that meets national demand and contributes to export markets. This initiative underscores NMC’s mission to strengthen Eswatini’s agricultural value chain and empower farmers through strategic programs and partnerships. For more information, farmers are encouraged to contact their nearest RDA or the NMC directly

  2. I have a big interest in growing sugar beans, I have land in Maphungwane(Five hectors) unfenced with no irrigation system but only a drilled borehole.
I have been looking for help/funding that could help me set up a farm.
I have secured a 10 year contract with NMC,
