The National Agricultural Investment Forum, a pivotal event aimed at transforming Eswatini’s agriculture sector, officially kicked off at The George Hotel in Manzini. With a theme focused on “Mobilising Partners for Agri-Food Systems Transformation,” the two-day forum brings together key players from government, the private sector, development partners, and civil society to reimagine the future of agriculture in Eswatini.
His Excellency Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini delivered the keynote address, stressing the strategic role of agriculture in the nation’s economic growth. “Agriculture remains one of Eswatini’s most critical sectors. With our target of achieving a 12% annual economic growth rate, agriculture will play a key part, especially through innovative and sustainable practices,” stated the Prime Minister. He also highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure, technology, and youth-focused agricultural programs to ensure the long-term success of the sector.
The forum, which is set to explore investment opportunities across various agricultural value chains, features presentations from sectors such as livestock, horticulture, and crops. Key stakeholders, including Eswatini’s Ministry of Agriculture and international development partners, showcased initiatives that aim to improve food security, reduce imports, and increase exports. The Eswatini Agricultural Development Fund (EADF) and other strategic initiatives were highlighted as critical components in driving private sector investment and fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
UN Resident Coordinator Ad Interim, Mr. Deepak Shah, emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG2, which focuses on eradicating hunger. “The UN is committed to ensuring food availability, accessibility, and affordability for all, while also promoting sustainable agricultural practices that empower marginalized groups, particularly women and youth,” said Mr. Shah.
As Eswatini faces the challenges of climate change and food insecurity, the forum serves as a platform for robust discussions on the future of agriculture in the country. Participants expressed optimism that the partnerships formed during the event will result in tangible investments and innovative solutions that will transform Eswatini’s agricultural landscape.
The forum is a significant step toward achieving food sovereignty, building resilience against climate impacts, and unlocking new opportunities for both smallholder farmers and large-scale agribusinesses in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
